MealSmith is a personal recipe app. It is designed to keep your recipes on your device and in your iCloud account. This policy explains what data is involved when you use the app and how it is handled.

What we collect

MealSmith does not require an account and does not collect personal information such as your name, email address, or location.

The information the app handles is:

  • Your recipes. The text you enter when saving or creating a recipe. Stored on your device and, if iCloud is enabled, in your private iCloud account.
  • Your display name for sharing. If you choose to enter a display name, it is stored locally and included in share links you create.
  • Shared recipe links. When you share a recipe, the content is saved temporarily on MealSmith's servers with a unique ID. Share links expire after 30 days. Only someone with your specific link can access it.

iCloud and device storage

Your recipes are stored locally on your device. If you are signed in to iCloud, they are also backed up to your private CloudKit database, accessible only to you and governed by Apple's iCloud privacy terms. We do not have access to your iCloud data.

URL import

When you import a recipe by pasting a link, the URL is processed by MealSmith's own server on your behalf. Third-party services involved in fetching the content never see your IP address or device. The fetched content is used to extract the recipe and is not stored by MealSmith.

AI features

When you use Forge or any assisted recipe feature, the text you enter is processed by a third-party AI service to generate a structured recipe. No identifying information is sent alongside it — not your name, account details, or device identifiers.

Our AI provider's privacy policy is available at openai.com/policies/privacy-policy.

Voice input

MealSmith uses Apple's system keyboard microphone for voice input. Speech is processed entirely on your device by Apple's operating system. MealSmith does not receive, transmit, or store your voice recordings.

Analytics and error logging

MealSmith uses PostHog, hosted on EU servers, to collect anonymous usage events such as recipe imports, feature usage, and app errors. This helps us understand how the app is being used and identify problems.

PostHog does not receive your recipe content, your name, or any personally identifiable information. Only event names and basic technical context (such as app version and error type) are logged.

MealSmith does not use any advertising networks or tracking tools. We do not track you across other apps or websites.

Children

MealSmith is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect any information from children.
